Fresh Peach Breakfast Goodness
I don't know why I love this dish so much. To me, it's comfort food, creamy and full in your mouth, like rice pudding -- only cold. And filled with peaches. And berries. And the crunch of a little walnut.
You can eat this Peach Muesli with Berries for breakfast, lunch, or snack. I'm sure I've eaten it for dinner, too, in the same way you sometimes pour yourself a bowl of Cheerios and call it a day.
For some reason I make this in no other month than July, when the backyard peach tree gives forth her exquisite magic, one whiff of which tells you there is truly no other place you'd rather be than right here, nose in fruit, inhaling summer.
Mmmm. I think it's time to go make another batch.
2 c. fresh peaches, peeled and chopped
1 1/2 c. apple juice (I've also used white grape juice)
8 oz. vanilla or peach non-fat yogurt (or you can use plain yogurt, with a little maple syrup to sweeten)
1/2 t. vanilla
a large handful of berries (blackberries, blueberries, raspberries -- it doesn't matter) to throw on top of each serving
a small handful of chopped walnuts to throw on top of each serving
In medium bowl (one that has a lid is perfect), combine oatmeal, peaches, juice, yogurt, and vanilla. Stir together well. If eating immediately, throw some in a bowl and toss on the berries and nuts. If eating later, just put in the fridge, covered, until you're ready to eat. Toss on the nuts and berries before serving. Keeps for several days -- if it lasts that long.
NOTE: Recipe comes from the Venice Yacht Club Cookbook of 1998, which was dedicated to the memory of my Aunt Jan, a kind and fun lady. Miss you, Aunt Jan.
NOTE #2: If you have lots and lots of peaches, consider making some peach nectar. Perfect for freezing and giving you that mid-winter reminder of summer.

Oh Lynn, this sounds so delicious I could actually go for a bowl right now! I'll be sure and make it for Marion for National Peach Month in August!!!
Thank you so much for sharing...
P.S. I'll be answering your email first thing in the morning:)
Hi Lynn, I just picked a basket of peaches. Not to mention muesli is one of my favorite breakfasts in the whole world, I have never thought of adding fresh peaches to it. I know what I am going to be eating now. :) Thanks
Louise, National Peach Month!!? How wonderful. I had no idea. Our peaches always come ripe in July, but it's exciting to think that even if we're a bit early, the peaches have their very own month :)
Farm Girl, I don't think I've ever eaten muesli other than this recipe. What kind do you like? What do you put in it? Inquiring minds want to know.
Hi Lynn,
On the peach front, no we did not have a big crop this year, in fact, I might get one more basket but that is all, I have 3 trees and only one had fruit. It was like your plum tree you had so many green plums and I didn't have a single one. This was a odd year for stone fruit for us.
It is a simple zucchini relish recipe.
Here is the one I use, well sort of
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/sweet-zucchini-relish/
Except I don't add all of the celery seed nor the pickling spices nor the nutmeg. I don't like the taste of them so I just do everything else. What I like about it is I chop the vegetables and then sprinkle with salt and put it in the fridge until the next morning when I am not tired and get it all canned. There are a million recipes and this is good if your are drowning in squash. I use a mixture of yellow and green squash and I use different colored bell peppers too. I like it to look full of color.
I hope it helps, it is good if you like sweet relish. I was never a fan but I like this one and my kids like it and they all eat it on hot dogs. Megan said she put it in pasta salad and I never tired that yet.
Hey Lynn, I just saw your note on this post, I put dried dates and dried cranberries and sometimes brown sugar and coconut and sunflower seeds and walnuts. I put flax seed and sesame seeds too. In the summer I put fresh blueberries and strawberries and raspberries. I love the stuff. I think I first ran across this when I used to use the Natural foods cookbook by La Leche League. So you know how old it is. :)
Thanks, Farm Girl, for all the great information. I will try that relish recipe. We have just one zucchini plant, but several cucumber plants, and I think I've already put up enough dill pickles. Time to move on to something else ;)
Is there any time of year that's more enchanting than peach season? Just the aroma of peaches makes me smile. What a great way to serve them!
Delicious! We have to take advantage of the fruit when it's in season! The peaches are marvelous right now.
This is my kind of breakfast. YUM!
Not only do they have their very own month, Lynn, peaches have there own Peach Month Board on my Pinterest too. (I'm pretty sure you'll be able to see it even if you're not on Pinterest:)
Love this recipe, and I will give it a try. You are so fortunate to have a peach tree in your backyard.
I know this is a long shot, but you wouldn't happen to have any of the older Venice Yacht Club Cookbooks, would you? I'm looking for a peach pie recipe by Dan Clayton that was printed in there many years ago. Thanks!
