Berries, berries, everywhere

Everything's coming up berries around here.
Last week we snagged 18 pounds of olallieberries at the nearby you-pick farm.
After four batches of jam;


one batch of olallieberry syrup;








one (ill-received) berries-in-the-ice cube experiment
(note to self: family members do not like being surprised by unfamiliar floating objects in their evening water glasses);
one batch of berry shortcake (that in my tizzy over the ice cube failure, I forgot to photograph);


several berry smoothies;






one batch of berry ice;





two batches of fruit leather;











half a batch of cute little berry tartlets (a Rachael Ray recipe made on the back of muffin tins);





















I can now say . . . Operation Berries: complete.

Except, of course, for all of this we still have to eat . . .

Hi there!! Thanks for stopping by my blog. I love what you did with all these berries.

I grew up in MD and I really really miss the vegetable and fruits from up there. Here in FL, I'm still getting a hang of when to garden and what grows best in sandy soil. I haven't been too impressed as to what FL has to offer when it comes to gardening, but I'm hoping to get better.

You picked 18 pounds of *what kind* of berries??? Olallie?? I have never...in all my born days...heard of an olallie berry. It looks really good, whatever it is. :)
I'm so sorry about the ice cube failure. :( I know that must've hurt you to the core that it wasn't well received. :( But time heals and you'll be able to move forward. LOL!
All in all, Operation Berry appears to have been a complete success!! :) You've been one busy little beaver.

I hate it when my experiments are ill-received.

Hmpph.

I personally would have been delighted with floating berries in my drink.

Since I'm fairly new to your blog, have you done anything on freezer cooking? I'm inspired to stock my freezer for later use.

Denise, Lori -- Sorry, guess not everyone is familiar with olallieberries. Here are your fun facts of the day, taken straight from the Gizdich Ranch (Watsonville, CA) information sheet:
"The olallieberry originated at Corvallis, Oregon by George Waldo of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station. Olallie is the result of a cross between Black Logan and Young berry. It was released commercially in Jan. 1950. The Olallieberry got its name from the Chinook Indians of the Columbia River who called all blackberries 'Olallie.'"

I don't know about you, but I feel smarter already :)

Carpoolqueen, I haven't written much here about freezer cooking. Most of what I freeze are baked goods (breads, rolls, pizza crusts), extra quiches made on purpose, seasonal stuff like peach nectar or tomato soup that I process when the produce is ripe (olallieberry syrup, for example ;)). I also like to freeze cookie dough, already shaped into balls (though it doesn't last long). I'd love to hear more about what you decide to freeze. That's a great topic.

I popped in to say that I'd never heard of olallieberries, but now I know from reading your reply. How clever I feel!!

I can't wait until it is berry time around here. I love loganberries - and raspberries - and blackberries and olallieberries...well I'm sure I would love olallieberries...I think I would, wouldn't I?
