Blue Cheese Salad Dressing

That's the best word to describe this blue cheese salad dressing. Recipe thoughtfully provided by Lisa who blogs about family, faith, food, nature -- lots of fun stuff -- over at Moore Minutes.
I've tried five blue cheese dressing recipes over the last month or two. Most have been edible (well, except for the one that was mainly water and vinegar). But I was looking for that knock-it-out-of-the-ballpark recipe. I love making foods from scratch but honestly, if I can't at least duplicate the quality of what I can buy at the store, I'm not sure it's worth the trouble.
Until this recipe, I had always liked store-bought blue cheese dressing better than what I could concoct myself. But now? No stinkin' way. Lisa's recipe is superb. Better than the stuff I've been buying. Reminds me of the cold, creamy, chunky dressing you'd get at your favorite restaurant.
2 c. mayonnaise (do not use fat-free or light mayo, says Lisa. Also, no Miracle Whip)
1 c. sour cream
3/4 c. buttermilk (I used regular milk with a couple t. of lemon juice added; let sit 5 minutes)
tub of blue cheese crumbles
a few drops Worcestershire sauce
a few drops red wine vinegar
garlic salt
onion powder
dash of salt
Stir together mayonnaise, sour cream, buttermilk, and blue cheese. Add in seasonings and refrigerate.
This makes a lot, so feel free to divide if that works best for your family.
What do you think? Do you have foods you prefer to buy ready-made because you can't find a great homemade version?
NOTE: I've linked this post to Works-for-me Wednesday, the blog carnival where you can get all kinds of great new ideas. Check it out here.

By the way, Lisa, Kahuna also agrees this recipe is a winner. After my previous failed attempts, he is understandably a bit skittish at trying yet another homemade blue cheese salad dressing. But tonight he bravely gave it a go and pronounced that he liked it better than the store bought he's been clutching. True success :)

Bookmarked! I feel the same way. I'll buy store made til I find a better homemade recipe. This does look like a keeper. Love blue cheese salad dressing!

Yeah, I admit there are items that I buy store made because I can't do them as well at home. One of them is my very very favorite oatmeal cookie. It's made in the store's bakery and no way can I come close. The search goes on...it's out there somewhere!

Glad you found a dressing awed you. The recipe looks great. I think the buttermilk, that would give it a nice tang.

I have a deep, abiding love for blue cheese dressing and quite frankly, I've found very few that live up to my standards. And given that the appropriate vehicle for blue cheese dressing is buffalo wings and I would sell my soul for a good buffalo wing, I'm constantly on the lookout. Which is a long way of saying thanks for posting this--I'm definitely going to try it :).

Sorry...just went back to read through the recipe better and didn't see where you noted how long this lasts in the fridge. What do you think? Week?

Ingrid, I would say it lasts two weeks, especially if your milk and sour cream are newly purchased. I just finished up the last of ours for lunch ;) and I'm sure it was in the fridge for a couple of weeks. I did cut the recipe in half, though, as it made quite a bit.

Hi Lynn,

Thanks for coming by my blog and leaving your kind words as well as letting me know where I could find out about the sweet freezer pickles. I might just have to grow some cucumbers this year :)

First time I tasted blue cheese salad dressing, I don't like too much, but I think that it was because the restaurant where I ate was a terrible recipe to do it. However when my mother prepared it to me yesterday afternoon I stayed fascinated. and she told me that she sow the recipe in this blog.
