Homemade Food Gifts, Part Two
After a previous post on homemade food gifts, Susy asked if I had a recipe for some cookie mix-in-a-jar that looks good and makes good cookies. I think this Chocolatey Peanut Butter Cookie Mix, from the Gooseberry Patch Gift Mixes Cookbooklet #1, fills the bill nicely.
If you want to learn how to make these cute little crazy quilt jar lids to top off your gift, see here.
1 1/2 c. powdered sugar
3/4 c. cocoa
1 1/2 c. flour
1 t. baking powder
1/4 t. salt
In wide-mouth, one quart jar, smush in the brown sugar. Then pour in the powdered sugar and pack down well. Next, add the layer of cocoa, pack down, and wipe the sides of the jar with a paper towel to remove any puffs of cocoa from the sides. In small bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt, then add that as your final layer. The whole thing should fit perfectly.
Add a gift tag with the following instructions:
Cream together 1/2 c. butter, 2 eggs, and 1/2 c. peanut butter. Stir in the dry mix. Feel free to use your hands :). Shape into one-inch balls. Place on greased (or parchment paper-lined) cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 - 15 minutes. Makes 30 - 36 cookies.

hi there!! i was just about to start making a bunch of these make-a-mix recipe jars :)
you think i could halve the recipe and put them in wide mouth pint jars... i have lots of pint jars and WM quarts are hard to come by....
Callista, I would think it would work just fine to cut this recipe in half and use pint jars. Just make sure you adjust the ingredient amounts of butter, eggs, peanut butter you tell people to use in your instructions, and tell them it'll make 15 to 18 cookies.
Those lids are super cute! I've always wanted to make gifts in a jar for close friends. I did make dry hot coacoa mix in a coffee mug one time. But that's about as close as I've gotten...lol.
I gave away a Gifts in a Jar Cookie recipe cookbook last month and in November I will be giving away a Gifts in a Jar Bars cookbook. I love this kind of giving.
i've been wanting to try doing something like this for a while now. it looks great!
I always thought these cookies in a jar were such a cute idea, but I've never made them! I'll have to give it a try! And I love the quilted lids, that's like the icing on the cake! ;)
Do you have something for chocolate chip cookies in the jar? I have seen them but just wondering.
Hi Barb, and welcome to the blog world :) I've never done a chocolate chip cookie mix in a jar, but I do have a "sand art brownie mix" recipe with chocolate chips that you layer in a jar. Do you want that?
Does anyone else have a chocolate chip cookie mix in a jar they've made and can pass on to the rest of us? :)
I was just asked to contribute to a class for easy, creative, and inexpensive gift ideas for the holidays and I love this. I'm also intrigued with the fact that it has powdered sugar instead of granulated sugar. I've never tried a cookie recipe with powdered sugar before. I might just have to whip a batch of these just skipping the jar part. :)
Hi Lynn, I just wanted to tell you I finally got my homemade truffles posted on my blog! They're perfect for homemade food gifts! :) http://www.thought4food.us/?p=1449
Thank you so much for posting this (and the other post!). I want to try this for sure. It looks super cute AND yummy.
Love this idea! I am going to be making some of these to have on hand. They are so cute.
